Description of Service Learner Role
There are three available projects:
Teacher Assistant for Preschool Children
Location: Erie Community Center
Time: Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to noon (flexible)
• Read books to a small group of preschool children
• Help the teacher with various classroom activities including story dictation/journal writing
• Assist the teacher with pre-writing class
• Help children acquire English skills by actively engaging conversation with them
Individual/Group Tutor for School-Age Children
Location: Erie Neighborhood House, Erie Community Center, Erie Charter School
Time: Monday to Thursday, 2 to 5 p.m. (flexible)
• Assist school-age children with homework
• Tutor children with learning problems (especially in math and reading)
• Mentor children to provide them with dependable role models
• Provide children with individual attention and support geared to their specific academic need
Literacy Program Assistant
Location: Erie Neighborhood House
Time: Monday to Thursday, 2 to 5 p.m. (flexible)
• Serve as a reading tutor for school-age children
• Assist the reading specialist with various literacy skill and training activities
• Assist the children to follow individualized plans and recommendations
• Administer assessment of literacy skills (e.g., Dibbles Literacy Test) and develop individualized activity plans and recommendations
Organization Requirements
• TB test and background check
• Nine-month commitment
• Attend monthly on-campus Service Learning seminars
